AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 11, Rays 5
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.
CC Sabathia won for the first time in more than a year, Alex Rodriguez hit one of five New York homers and the Yankees beat the Rays. Sabathia (1-5) allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings to stop a nine-start winless streak since a victory over Boston on April 24, 2014. The lefty missed most of last season due to a knee injury. Rodriguez put the Yankees up 1-0 on his eighth homer this season and 662nd overall, a long drive to left field in the first. A-Rod was hit on the arm by Erasmo Ramirez’s pitch in the ninth and advanced to second on defensive indifference. He scored when Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer that made it 11-5.
Rangers 8, Royals 2
ARLINGTON, TEXAS
Adrian Beltre hit his 399th career home run, newcomer Thomas Field hit his first and the Rangers beat the weary Royals. Prince Fielder also homered for the Rangers to back Colby Lewis (3-2), who beat the Royals for the first time since 2003 by limiting them to one run and three hits over seven innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked two. The defending AL champion Royals didn’t arrive in Texas until about 5:45 a.m. Monday after their 10-inning, rain-delayed victory at Detroit that ended after midnight. Danny Duffy (2-2), who traveled ahead of his teammates, matched his career high with six walks while pitching only 3 2-3 innings. He struck out four while giving up six runs and five hits.
Orioles 5, Blue Jays 2
BALTIMORE
Manny Machado and Chris Davis hit first-inning homers, Ubaldo Jimenez had a season-high nine strikeouts over seven sharp innings and the Orioles celebrated their return to Baltimore with a victory. Adam Jones also homered for the Orioles, who had lost five of six to fall into last place in the AL East. Because of rioting and violence in the city, the Orioles last played in front of their home fans on April 26. Enjoying the comfort of familiar surroundings and fueled by a spirited crowd of 20,468, Baltimore took a quick 3-0 lead and cruised to the finish behind Jimenez (3-2). Ezequiel Carrera had two doubles and two RBIs for the Blue Jays, who fell to 5-2 against Baltimore this season.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 4, Mets 3
CHICAGO
Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo homered on consecutive pitches in the first, leading Jon Lester and the Cubs. Lester (3-2) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, and three relievers from Chicago’s struggling bullpen closed it out. Justin Grimm and Zac Rosscup each got three outs before Hector Rondon finished the six-hitter for his seventh save in eight chances.
INTERLEAGUE
Brewers 10, White Sox 7
MILWAUKEE
Elian Herrera hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Khris Davis followed with a solo shot, helping the Brewers hold off the White Sox. Herrera, filling in at third for injured starter Aramis Ramirez, homered for the second straight night. His shot into the left-field stands off reliever Zach Duke (1-2) broke a 7-all tie. Davis followed two batters later with his pinch-hit shot high and deep to left. The Brewers bullpen squandered a 6-0 lead after Chicago scored five runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Adam Eaton’s two-out RBI single off Jonathan Broxton (1-0) had tied the game at 7 in the top of the eighth.
