Another person enters plea in 2014 Shawn Cortez homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — A woman who was among 14 people indicted for their roles in the death of Shawn Cortez, 17, after a brawl on Winona Drive last year, entered a guilty plea today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Carla Higgins, 47, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstructing official business, amended from a felony.

Sentencing will be at a later date. As part of her sentence, Higgins must formally apologize to police.

Cortez was shot Aug. 17 during the brawl, which was between two families.

Most of those involved have already had their cases resolved. There will be two trials in June for the remainder of the defendants.
