Police: About 60 nabbed during weekend-long Warren Shield

WARREN — The flood of police officers that pulled over hundreds of motorists in the Warren area Friday morning through Sunday morning made about 60 arrests, which taxed the Trumbull County jail all weekend and is taxing Warren Municipal Court this morning.

Sheriff Thomas Altiere said the jail’s headcount this morning is 326, which is about 50 more than the ideal number of 260 to 280.

But his staff worked with local judges prior to the 48-hour Warren Shield operation to reduce the jail population in advance so there would be room for those arrested.

The previous Friday morning through Sunday morning produced 37 bookings, but that was probably a bit higher than normal because of the warmer weather in recent weeks, Altiere said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol assigned over 100 troopers to Warren Shield to make traffic stops throughout the Warren area and beyond. They were assisted by about 30 Warren police officers, about 20 deputies with the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office and numerous other officers with several county, state and federal agencies.

A review of the arrests during the two days reveals a large percentage of the arrests were for warrants, many of them for drug-related crimes, but there were also warrants for more serious crimes, such as felonious assault.

Many others were arrested for drunken driving and new drug-related offenses.

Though people in the community apparently realized within a few hours Friday that something was happening, it didn’t stop a 31-year-old Lordstown woman from purportedly cruising through town at 2:59 a.m. Sunday with crack cocaine in her possession.

Warren police charged her with felony drug possession and misdemeanor drug-paraphernalia possession. She was arraigned this morning and posted $1,500 bond.
