Standohar earns trip to Canton

HUBBARD

Girard High School student Mark Standohar shot a 74 at Deer Creek Golf Course in the Ohio Optimist Junior Golf Qualifying Tournament to advance to the next qualifier at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Canton.

Cardinal Mooney’s Ken Keller and Boardman’s Cade Kreps also have qualified for the 16-18 division.

The top scorers in Canton will advance to regional tournament in Florida.

Valparaiso wins series over YSU

VALPARAISO, IND.

Valparaiso pitchers Ryan Fritze and Trevor Haas combined for a three-hit shutout as the Crusaders beat the Youngstown State baseball team 5-0 at Emory G. Bauer Field.

The Penguins and Crusaders split a doubleheader on Saturday, and Sunday’s win gave the series win to Valparaiso.

YSU starter Jeremy Quinlan, making his first appearance in two weeks, matched Fritze and left after four shutout innings in which he allowed three base runners.

Valpo scored three two-out runs in the fifth inning with an infield single being the only hit in the inning. There were three Penguin errors in the inning, and all three runs that scored were unearned. The Crusaders went up 4-0 on Mark Johnson’s two-out RBI double in the sixth, and three straight one-out singles led to another run in the seventh.

Tuesday at 6 p.m., Youngstown State will host Ohio State for the first time in school history at Eastwood Field.

Pitt’s Vazquez gets 200th hit

ATLANTA

The University of Pittsburgh baseball team (17-31, 7-20 ACC) was unable to stymie Georgia Tech’s (32-18, 13-14 ACC) persistent offensive production as it fell, 10-3, in the decisive game of the series at Russ Chandler Stadium on Sunday as Boo Vazquez made history.

Vazquez (Cardinal Mooney) delivered an RBI single to center field in the eighth inning to post the 200th hit of his career. He is the 13th player in Pitt history to tally 200 career hits, 100 runs, and 100 RBIs.

“It’s special to me. It’s something that when I’m older, I’ll look back on as a good accomplishment,” Vazquez said. “It’s an honor and I think my family is proud of me.”

Price homers for California

CALIFORNIA, PA.

Freshman Emily Price (Howland) hit a solo homer to help the California University of Pennsylvania softball team sweep a doubleheader against Charleston.

The Vulcans (39-11) won 1-0 and 3-2. Price hit her eighth homer of the season.

Sharon Speedway rained out

HARTFORD

Thunderstorms popped up early evening on Saturday hitting Sharon Speedway. After waiting out a couple of the storms, the track received too much rain and with more on the radar, the decision was made to cancel the Mother’s Day Celebration, which also included the first appearance of the RUSH Late Models.

Rain checks are good for the remainder of the season. The next scheduled appearance for the RUSH Late Models is June 13.

Sioux Falls grabs 2-0 lead

MUSKEGON, MICH.

The Sioux Falls Stampede defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 6-1, on Sunday in Game 2 of the USHL’s Clark Cup Finals.

The Stampede has a 2-0 series lead and can win the cup on Friday on their home ice. Sioux Falls won Game 1, 3-2, on Saturday.

The Lumberjacks ousted the Youngstown Phantoms, three games to one, in the first round of the playoffs.
