The Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation today of a crash involving a motorcycle and a patrol cruiser.
Lt. Nakia Hendrix, commander of the patrol’s Canfield Post, said a trooper was driving northbound on Lipkey Road and stopped at the stop sign at its intersection with Mahoning Avenue and proceeded across the road Thursday afternoon.
A motorcyclist driving westbound on Mahoning struck the side of the patrol car and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with serious injuries. The trooper was not injured. Authorities were called to the accident at 2:19 p.m.
“The highway patrol is utilizing all resources to complete a thorough investigation,” Hendrix said. A crash reconstructionist was on the scene.
Patrol officials were sweeping up metal with a broom as the last remnants of the wreck were on the roadway about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. A patrol release said there would be no more details given Thursday, including the name of the motorcyclist and the trooper.
Tim Sebulsky, owner of T–N–T Motors, on the corner of Lipkey and Mahoning Avenue, said the intersection frequently has accidents.
“They need a red light so bad [here],” he said. “It’s so bad to get out of here. ... You can’t pull out and go left [onto Mahoning].”
