Boys track defeats Howland


The Boardman boys track team improved its 2015 season record to 6-0 by defeating the Howland Tigers and Warren Harding Raiders in an AAC meet on April 21.

The Spartans opened the meet by placing second in the 4x800 relay with the team of junior Nathan Hadley, senior Nick Long, sophomore Nathaniel Ams and junior Adam Deeley.

In the next event, the 110 hurdles, junior Nick Cessna placed third and senior Zach Smotzer finished fourth. In the 100, junior AJ Pantaleo placed second and senior Jon Cina finished fourth, and the 4x200 relay team of sophomore Kobe Adu-Poku, junior Tyler Kellam, freshman Noah Massie and freshman Ethan Himes was first.

In the 1600-meter run, Hadley took first place with Long finishing second. The Spartans placed first in the 4x100 meter relay with the team of Pantaleo, Massie, Cina and sophomore Sheldon Broyles. Adu-Poku placed first in the 400, with junior Jarod Wolfe in fourth, and in the 300-meter hurdles, Cessna placed second with junior Cannon Carlile in third.

The 800 was won by Hadley with Ams in third and Deeley in fourth. In the 200-meter dash, Himes took second and freshman Justice Jama was fourth, while in the 3200-meter run Long was first and sophomore Nick Digiacomo was fourth. The 4x400 relay team of Kellam, sophomore Samer Ramahi, sophomore Jonathan Tran and senior Dan Liptak placed first.

In the field events, senior Doug Kephart placed first in the shot put and third in the discus. Junior Jason Jama was third in the shot put, sophomore George Wallace was second in the discus, junior Markeese Haynes was fourth in the shot put and junior Shawn Devlin was first in the discus. Sophomore Richard Fisher was first in the high jump. Ramahi was second in the high jump with Justice Jama fourth and junior Ziad Khalil placed fourth in the long jump.

Due to extreme wind gust, the pole vault was unable to be contested.

“This was a great way to bounce back from a frustrating day at County,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips, “Howland and Harding are strong in certain areas so we had to really perform well as a team to be successful today.”
