Hiscox appointed

By a 4-1 vote, the city school board appointed the deputy superintendent to fill the job temporarily after Superintendent Connie Hathorn leaves.
At a special meeting Wednesday, the board selected Doug Hiscox, deputy superintendent for academic affairs, to be superintendent pro tempore when Hathorn uses accrued vacation time before his June 30 effective resignation.
Hathorn is expected to begin using vacation May 28. Hiscox will serve from that date until an interim superintendent takes office.
Board President Brenda Kimble, Vice President Michael Murphy and members Richard Atkinson and Jerome Williams voted in favor of Hiscox’s appointment, with member Jackie Adair opposed. Members Marcia Haire-Ellis and Ronald Shadd were absent.
Man reports attacks
YOUNGSTOWN
A West Side man said he was attacked twice by his live-in girlfriend Tuesday morning. Police were called to a home in the 500 block of South Hazelwood Avenue about 6 a.m., where the 25-year-old man said he was arguing with her while they were eating breakfast when she threw a coffee cup, which cut his chest. He refused treatment and police left. The woman was not there.
Police were called to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital just after 9 a.m., when the man said he was trying to sleep, and his girlfriend came back and stabbed him with a butcher’s knife. Reports said the man was cut in two places. The woman was not found by police.
Pinned by gun safe
YOUNGSTOWN
Firefighters were needed to help a man who was pinned down by a gun safe at a home in the 400 block of West Delason Avenue about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday. Reports said Firefighter Kent Wright climbed a ladder to a second-floor window, crawled through the window and got the safe off the person by himself. The safe weighed several hundred pounds, reports said. The man refused medical treatment.
Road to be closed
WARREN
Leavitt Road between West Market Street and U.S. Route 422 will be closed May 19 for a bridge inspection performed by MS Consultants Inc. The recommended detour route is east on West Market Street, then northwest on Parkman Road.
