Pelini offically signs YSU contract

Youngstown State University football coach Bo Pelini’s contract has become official.

It’s for four years worth $213,000 annually. The contract runs through February 2019. If Pelini wins the Missouri Valley Conference Title, he gets $3,000. For every playoff game, he earns $3,000. If the Penguins win the FCS National Championship, he gets $20,000.

Pelini can get an increase in base pay every year, in accordance with procedure determined by the university for professional and administrative employees.

There is a buyout and it ranges from one year base pay to $100,000 depending on the timing of his departure.

Pelini is not being paid a $50,000 marketing fee which former coach Eric Wolford received.

Springfield’s Thomson chooses Westminster

Springfield High School senior Elizabeth Thompson signed with Westminster College to play volleyball.

She led the Tigers in sssist percentage and ace percentage last season. Thompson was named ITCL second team District 1 second team. She was also a three-year letter winner at Springfield.

YSU women’s soccer team helps fight cancer

Youngstown

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team hosted a Spring Clinic in conjunction with Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and University Hospital in an effort to support and raise awareness for pediatric medical treatments and services. The Penguins, along with members of the Robert Morris women’s soccer program, welcomed 25 participants and siblings in “Kids Kicking Cancer” event at Farmers National Bank Field. Giant Eagle and Pizza Hut donated food for the clinic.

Ursuline’s Carnathan joins Detroit Mercy

DETROIT

The University of Detroit Mercy women’s track and field program and head coach Guy Murray has announced the addition of four incoming student-athletes for the 2015-16 season. All have inked National Letters of Intent with UDM and will join the team in the fall.

Alexandra Carnathan (Ursuline), Kye Dozier, Annmarie Taylor and Natalie Vizard are set to join the Titans.

“It’s a great start to the class of 2019,” Murray said. “Alexandra and Natalie as state medalists will help immediately in the short sprints.

Carnathan is a two-time medalist in the 100-meter dash in the Division 2 state finals. She placed third in 2014 after finishing sixth as a sophomore in 2013.

Mill Creek Golf Course closed Friday morning

Youngstown

The Mill Creek Golf Course will be closed Friday morning due to a scheduled private event. Both North and South Courses will be closed. The Course will reopen to the public at 1:30 pm.

Former Raiders fullback Marv Hubbard dies

LIVERMORE, Calif.

Marv Hubbard, a bruising fullback who made three Pro Bowls in the early 1970s for the Oakland Raiders, has died. He was 68.

The Raiders said Hubbard died Monday in Livermore. His wife, Virginia, told the Bay Area News Group that Hubbard had a long bout with prostate cancer.

Hubbard played in 90 games over seven seasons for the Raiders from 1969-75. He also played one season in Detroit. He rushed for 4,544 yards in his career with 23 touchdowns. He also caught 85 passes for 628 yards and one score.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio says Hubbard was one of his childhood heroes and that he wore No. 44 in high school to honor Hubbard.

Hubbard’s coach, John Madden, called him a “tough guy” and a “tough runner.”
