Voters in Liberty showed confidence in the school district with passage of a 7.75-mill renewal levy.

The school district got out of fiscal emergency in December, and its election victory Tuesday means $1,176,316 will continue to flow into the district for five more years. The levy won with 55 percent of the vote.

Residents in the Hubbard school district showed huge support, approving a 4.9-mill, five-year renewal levy with 76 percent voting for the measure.

All school issues in the county won voter approval.

Girard voters, meanwhile, said yes to the renewal of a 1.5-mill garbage levy by an 84 percent margin.

The city uses garbage levies to provide the city with pickup on one day per week by one company.

Voters in the Lakeview Local Schools took perhaps a greater leap of faith, giving approval to the 4.55-mill, 37-year bond issue for construction of a new elementary/middle school to replace two existing ones.

It passed by 56 percent of the vote after failing by 51 percent in November.

“There’s a lot of planning to do,” said an elated Bob Wilson, Lakeview superintendent, after complete but unofficial results were in. “We’ll take the first shovel of dirt as soon as possible.”

Wilson said he is proud of the step forward people in the school district have taken “for the future of public education. I think the key was we got the facts out. I think [voters] weighed the facts.”

The state will contribute $9.4 million of the cost, or 30 percent, and residents will pay the other $23.8 million.

Cortland police also received support for a 1.5-mill additional levy that will raise an additional $198,360 per year.
