The Neurofibromatosis (NF) Network is having its third annual Great Steps4NF Walk at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, on May 16. Participants can register online at www.nfnetwork.org.

Registration is at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 10 a.m. Preregistration is $20 for adults ($25 the day of the event); children 4-10, $12; and 3 and under, $6. Walkers can either walk as an individual or as a team and each individual raising $100 or more for the event will have their registration fee waived.

The Great Steps4NF walk benefits the disorder by raising awareness and funds for research. NF research is aimed at identifying a treatment and cure for this genetic, progressive nervous system disorder.

Free mammograms and pap smears will be available at the Midlothian Free Health Clinic, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., on May 21, by appointment only, to women between 40 and 60 who do not have health insurance.

Label discussion

Learn to read and decipher food labels and how information on labels relates to health at a “Healthy Eating for You: Label Reading” presentation at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St.

Registered dietician Bridget Lackey will lead an informational discussion and answer questions. The presentation is free and open to the public. Reservations are appreciated. Call 330-480-3070.

Training program

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center begins its fourth annual Couch to 5K training program at 6 p.m. May 18, the first of three training sessions per week for 12 weeks. The schedule is 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays.

There is a free informational seminar at 6:30 p.m. May 14 at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center, SouthBridge West (behind Second Sole), 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. Participants will also meet trainers and receive program details. The program typically has participants in their 20s to 70s and at different fitness levels enabling participants to find others near their same fitness level to run with.

Fitness, safety fair

The Mahoning Valley Healthy Kids Coalition will host an interactive Fitness and Safety Fair at Southern Park Mall concourse in Boardman on May 16 and at Eastwood Mall in Niles on June 6.

Activities include jump rope and hula hoop challenges, a nutrition “wheel of future” game, bicycle safety course, texting and driving simulator and the opportunity to sit in emergency services vehicles. Participating children will win free prizes.

Other highlights include a car seat raffle, pedometer giveaways, BMI charts from the county health departments, story time with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley community program opportunities.
