Penguins celebrate Senior Day with blowout

D.J. Carr pitched a solid six-and-two-thirds innings in a spot start and got plenty of run support as the Youngstown State baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a 9-3 win over Oakland on Sunday at Eastwood Field.

The victory gave the Penguins a series win over the Golden Grizzlies and their third straight Horizon League series win at home.

Carr earned his first win as a Penguin, giving up two runs off of six hits while posting three strikeouts.

In the final home league game of their careers, seniors Brent Gillespie and Matt Sullivan both had two hits, and Gillespie scored three times.

Frank Califano, Alex Larivee and Lorenzo Arcuri also had two hits, and Califano and Jonny Miller each had two RBIs

The Penguins put up five of their nine runs in the first six innings, scoring one run five different times.

Califano tripled to right field and scored on Jason Shirley’s RBI single in the first.

After Oakland tied the score in the top of the second, Sullivan singled and scored on Califano’s fielder’s choice to put the Penguins ahead 2-1.

YSU put another run up in the bottom of the fourth as Gillespie scored on Califano’s RBI single to left.

In the top of the fifth, Larivee homered to left field for his fourth home run of the season, and YSU put up its fifth run in the sixth as Gillespie scored on Kevin Hix’s RBI single.
