Friends of Scouting breakfast to feature Tressel as speaker

The 10th annual Friends of Scouting breakfast fundraiser, sponsored by the Whispering Pines District of the Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America, is scheduled for 7 a.m. May 19 at Camp Stambaugh, 3712 Leffingwell Road.

The theme this year is Leadership, which will recognize the impact Scouting has on providing leadership training to youths and to how it prepares them for a successful future.

Stacia Erdos will serve as mistress of ceremonies, and the keynote speaker will be Jim Tressel, president of Youngstown State University. Also speaking will be Artemus Scissum, principal of Martin Luther King Elementary School in Youngstown.

The Greater Western Reserve Council Scouting Museum will be open, and people movers will transport attendees to the dining hall.

The council serves families in Mahoning County and Hubbard, comprising 1,215 youths involved in 42 units supported by 536 adult volunteers. Scoutreach is a program for “at risk” children in city school systems. It serves 450 Cub Scouts in the Youngstown schools.

The fundraiser strengthens the Scouting program, which strives to develop leadership, character, citizenship and life-saving skills accompanied by camping, rock climbing, hiking and more.
