Youth orchestra in spring concert

The Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra will present its spring concert, “European Musical Delights,” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St.

Tickets are available in advance at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office, by phone at 330-744-0264, and at youngstownsymphony.com, and also will be sold at the door before the performance.

The Youth Orchestra is a group of young musicians, age 13 to 18, from Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania under the leadership of Stephen L. Gage and Richard M. Smrek.

In keeping with the theme of Sunday’s program, the Youth Orchestra will perform the music of Sibelius (Norway), Rossini (Italy), Doppler (France) and Elgar (England).

This season’s YSYO Senior Concerto Competition winner Sebastian Calvin, a senior at South Range High School, will perform “Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise” for flute and orchestra by Franz Doppler.

The Youth Orchestra will perform “Italian in Algiers” Overture by Rossini and the first and fourth movements of the Sibelius Symphony No. 2.

Completing the program will be a selection by the YSO Percussion Ensemble conducted by John Vitullo and “Nimrod” from Elgar’s Enigma Variations by the YSYO Brass Choir, under the direction of Michael Barkett.

During the concert, awards will be presented to graduating senior students in recognition of their outstanding musicianship and dedicated service to the YSYO. Other awards to be presented include the Garnet A. Klepfer Award and the Harry A. Syak Memorial Scholarship.
