Two cleanups today
WARREN
Two cleanups are set for this morning starting at 9 a.m.: the Kenmore Neighborhood Association cleanup and the Historic Perkins Neighborhood cleanup.
The Kenmore cleanup will begin at the Aetna building, Kenmore Avenue and Youngstown Road. The Perkins cleanup will begin at the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Belmont Street Northwest.
All are welcome to participate. Lunch will be provided after each event.
Police probe death
NEW CASTLE, pa.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of Frederick D. Swilling, 24, of New Castle as a homicide after finding his body along the berm of Hoffmaster Road in North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, Friday morning.
Swilling apparently died of a gunshot wound, and investigators ask the public to provide any information they have on his whereabouts in the 12 hours before his body was found at 8:45 a.m. within a mile of Mohawk Area Schools complex, which is about 12 miles east of Poland.
A Pittsburgh television station reported that a parent driving his child to school spotted the body. The school went into a lockdown after the discovery was made.
Fire dept. fundraiser
VERNON
More than 100 prize baskets, ranging from sports memorabilia to gift certificates and worth more than $10,000, will be awarded during a basket auction at 11 a.m. today at the Burghill-Vernon Fire Department, 6915 state Route 88.
Proceeds will benefit the department’s turnout gear and scholarship funds. Crazy Dave the illusionist will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Drawings will begin at 3 p.m.
3 injured in shooting
WARREN
Two people suffered gunshot wounds and a third was treated for glass in his eyes during what appears to have been a carjacking at the BP gas station, 1290 East Market St., Friday night.
One of the victims was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. A second victim had a superficial gunshot wound to the arm, said Warren police Lt. Martin Gargas.
As of late Friday, no arrests had been made in the 8:22 p.m. incident. But police are looking for two black males in their 20s.
