Thunder introduce new coach Billy Donovan

OKLAHOMA CITY

Billy Donovan says he considers it a privilege to coach Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Donovan was introduced as the Thunder’s new coach Friday, a day after he was hired.

The pressure will be on immediately — the Thunder have been successful but haven’t won a title since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008-09. Donovan says he hopes to build on what Scott Brooks accomplished the previous seven years.

Durant is the 2013-14 MVP and Westbrook the 2014-15 scoring champion.

The 49-year-old Donovan led Florida to two national championships, four Final Fours and seven Elite Eights in 19 seasons. He jokes that he’s coached in the league before. Eight years ago, he was hired by the Orlando Magic, only to change his mind the following day.

Manfred: Injuries don’t change DH feelings

CHICAGO

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says the recent instances of pitchers injuring themselves while batting haven’t changed his opinion that the sport benefits from the two leagues playing under different rules.

Before Friday’s game between the Cubs and Brewers, Manfred said that “over the long haul, I’m a status quo person on the DH.”

He adds: “I think the difference between the two leagues is a source of debate among fans, and I’m a big believer in the idea of when people are talking about baseball it’s a good thing.” Manfred also says he was surprised by the controversy around the Cubs’ delay in promoting top prospect Kris Bryant.

He notes that “this has been an issue that has been discussed and vetted at the bargaining table for multiple rounds.”

Bradley, Jimenez have heated exchange

SAN FRANCISCO

Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez got into a nose-to-nose argument Friday in the Match Play Championship on the final hole of a meaningless match.

Both had already been eliminated from their group. But this looked anything but a meaningless match.

Jimenez disputed a drop Bradley received.

Bradley became especially upset when the Spaniard barked at his caddie, who tried to intervene. Jimenez won the match, and while they talked on the 18th, the way Bradley stormed off made it clear nothing was settled.

Bradley said it was no big deal and everything was fine. But he said he had to stick up for his caddie and that Jimenez was “over the top” in an accusatory manner.

Babcock still uncertain about coaching future

DETROIT

Mike Babcock says he’s not rushing into any decisions about his future.

The Detroit coach, whose contract is expiring, expects to meet with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland at some point in the next 10 days to talk things over, and Babcock said Friday he also needs to consult his wife as he figures out where he wants to coach next season.

Babcock says people shouldn’t read anything more into what he says right now, because he doesn’t know himself what he’s going to do. He did say he has no interest in adding general manager duties to his coaching responsibilities, wherever he ends up.
