Marching percussion workshop, fest at YSU

The Dana School of Music will present a marching percussion workshop and Life Through Rhythm Festival on Saturday.

Hosted by the Youngstown State University marching band (Marching Pride) and Youngstown Percussion Collective, the event is a series of classes, workshops and demonstrations for percussionists.

It is free, but participants must register at http://goo.gl/TmzUJ0.

The workshop begins at 9 a.m. in the Watts Center on the YSU campus and includes a Marching Pride drumline hands-on workshop with instructor Dylan Kollat.

At 1 p.m., a hands-on snare-drum clinic will take place with guest artist Nick Angelis, assistant director of the University of Cincinnati Bearcat bands, and 1992 World Snare Drum champion. Angelis also was an original featured star performer for the Tony Award-winning show “Blast!” from 1999 to 2003.

Attendees are asked to bring their snare, carrier and sticks.

The day continues with the Life Through Rhythm Festival in Kilcawley Center beginning at 3 p.m. with a high school and college soloist and ensemble showcase concert.

A community drum circle, facilitated by Ed Davis and Cory Grant, will precede a showcase concert featuring local artists, which will begin at 7 p.m.
