Diplomat to speak on refugees’ plight

U.N. Diplomat Karen Koning AbuZayd, a Canfield native, will present “From Sarajevo to Syria — the Horror & Hope for Refugees” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road.

The event is free, but tickets are required. Call the center at 330-799-4941.

AbuZayd will draw on firsthand knowledge to describe the violence, unrest, poverty, oppression and suffering experienced by refugees in war-torn areas of the Middle East and other places.

The Ursuline Center is sponsoring the event. Afterward, audience members can register for a follow-up five-part series of classes on world religions being offered Mondays in June, taught by Sister Nancy, a longtime instructor of the subject at Youngstown State University.

Public tasting event to launch cookbook

The Recipes of Youngstown group will host a public tasting event from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St., to launch its second cookbook.

Proceeds from the book and event will benefit the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

Called “A Taste and a Memory,” the event will feature more than 30 dishes from the new book. Admission and parking are free, but guests can buy six tasting tickets for a $5 donation. Tickets also will be sold for a 70-basket raffle, a 50-50 raffle and a grand prize raffle.

Fundraiser to benefit animal charities

A Spay-ghetti Dinner fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Packard Park Shelter House, Mahoning Avenue NW, will benefit Cats Are People, Too, Trumbull County Pound Volunteers, TNR of Warren and Animal Pawtectors.

Meals consist of penne pasta, meatball, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage for $10 at the door or $8 in advance. Children 5 and under eat free.

Buy tickets at Pet Supplies Plus from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m., at tnrofwarren.org, and from volunteers.

Carryouts will be available, and there will be a basket auction, 50-50 raffle and a lottery ticket raffle.

A dog walk will be featured from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wear cat or dog clothes and receive one free basket raffle ticket.
