BHS students to present spring concert
The spring concert of the Boardman bands will take place on May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
The concert will feature the freshman band, symphonic band and the Boardman High School wind ensemble. Musical selections by the first two groups will include “Ashokan Farewell,” “Uptown Funk,” “Selections from ‘A Chorus Line,’” and “Stand By Me.” The wind ensemble will perform “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” with vocal accompaniment by members of the BHS vocal music department, “Highlights from ‘Star Wars,’” and “See Rock City” by Brant Karrick.
Senior soloist Michael Palagano will perform “Xylophonia” by Joe Green, which is a light piece featuring xylophone and percussion. Palagano is the son of Mike and Yvonne Palagano. He has studied drums and percussion since second grade with Stephen Ley, Dylan Kollat and Joseph Parlink. Palagano is percussion section leader in the Boardman Spartan Marching Band and principal chair percussion in the BHS symphony orchestra. He participates in OMEA Solo and Ensemble, was a member of this year’s OMEA District 5 Honors Band, plays in BHS jazz ensemble 3 and theatre orchestra. He is also a member of the St. Charles Youth Chamber Orchestra. His academic achievements will make him part of Youngstown State University’s Honors College in the fall, where he will major in civil engineering and minor in geography.
Both the symphonic band and wind ensemble recently participated in the OMEA District 5 Large Group Adjudicated Event more commonly known as “band contest.” Symphonic band earned an overall excellent rating in Class C and wind ensemble received an excellent rating in Class AA, which requires the most difficult music.
Donations of $3 for adults and $2 for students will be accepted at the door for the May 5 concert. Senior citizens will be admitted free of charge.
The Boardman Bands are under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri, Timothy P. Tuite, Steven C. Chambers and Michael J. Shevock.
