Sales tax to go up in Mahoning on Wed.

The total sales-tax rate in Mahoning County will increase 0.25 percent beginning Wednesday to 7.25 percent. The increase results from voter approval of a ballot initiative last November to renew an existing tax and seek additional revenue targeted to criminal justice operations in the county.

Also on Wednesday, Lucas County in Northwest Ohio will see its sales tax increase 0.25 percent to 7.25 percent.

Fifty counties in Ohio will now have the rate of 7.25 percent. The lowest rate is 6.5 percent; the highest is 8 percent in Cuyahoga County.

Escape artist plans film, talk at YSU

James Randi, magician, escape artist and the world’s most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims, will visit Youngstown State University at 7 p.m. today in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall.

“An Honest Liar,” a documentary of Randi’s life, will be screened, followed by a question-and-answer session. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the YSU departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Physics and Astronomy, as well as the YSU College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics College.

VXI to hire 260

VXI Global Solutions, LLC will fill 260 sales and customer care positions starting April 6, the company announced. A job fair will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with immediate interviews and on-the-spot hiring, company officials say.

“The positions will meet the needs of customers for a leading satellite TV provider as well as a leading money transfer provider,” said Pamela Hall, senior human resources manager for the company’s downtown Youngstown location inside 20 Federal Place on West Federal Street.

YMHA gets clean audit from state

The Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority has received the auditor of state award for excellence in recordkeeping after the auditor said it had given the authority a “clean” financial report.

To receive this award, a local government organization or school district must file timely financial reports with the state auditor’s office in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and the audit report must not contain any findings for recovery, material citations or weaknesses, significant deficiencies or questioned costs.

Food safety class

The Ohio State University Extension, 490 S. Broad St., will host produce safety and GAPs training from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 16.

This class meets the standards for the Food Safety Modernization Act for those farmers and growers who are raising produce for sale to the public.
