TCCA to hold POY banquet
The Trumbull County Coaches Association will have its 28th annual basketball player of the Year banquet Monday at 7 p.m. at Leo’s Ristorante in Warren. Each Trumbull county school is invited to nominate one boy and one girl for the award. Jared Ronai will be the featured speaker. Ronai is the men’s basketball coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Scalzo to speak at curbstone luncheon
Award-winning Vindicator sports reporter Joe Scalzo will be the guest speaker Monday at the weekly luncheon of The Curbstone Coaches at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza in Austintown. The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Justalittlesmoke wins Southern Park Stakes
Justalittlesmoke ($3.60) rolled to her third consecutive win as she captured the $75,000 Southern Park Stakes for registered Ohio bred 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Mahoning Valley Race Course. Always well placed under jockey Terry Haughton, the daughter of Smoke Glacken went after pacesetter Bold Cait approaching the top of the stretch, then grabbed the lead in mid-stretch en route to winning by more than 1 Ω lengths. The running time for the six furlongs on a track that played very fast throughout the afternoon was 1:10.69.
YSU women’s tennis beats Oakland
The Youngstown State women’s tennis team won five singles matches to beat Oakland by a 5-2 margin on Saturday at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins (9-8 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League) dropped the doubles point before rebounding during singles play.
YSU clinched the match when Nehel Sahni topped Elizabeth Guy 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.
Before Sahni’s victory, the Penguins won three of four completed singles matches. At No. 1, Marta Burak cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cam Sabourin. Next, Julianna Heino defeated Camille Hemond Hill in straight set at No. 5 winning 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2, Dominika Lackova beat Karine Celis by a 6-4, 6-4 score.
O’Connor’s BU going to Frozen 4
MANCHESTER, N.H.
Evan Rodrigues scored with 2:24 left in the third period and Boston University held on to beat Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 on Saturday in the NCAA hockey tournament’s Northeast Regional championship, sending the Terriers home with a berth in the Frozen Four.
Duluth pulled its goalie for the final 1:40 but the extra skater was no help against Matt O’Connor (Youngstown Phantoms 2010-12), who finished with 27 saves and was swarmed by his teammates after the buzzer.
Rodrigues had two goals and Matt Lane also scored for top-seeded BU (27-7-5), which is headed back to the Frozen Four for the first time since winning its fifth NCAA title in 2009.
Loney has assist in Denver win
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
Grant Arnold scored twice and Trevor Moore had a goal and an assist to help Denver beat Boston College 5-2 in the regional semifinals. Ty Loney (Youngstown Phantoms 2010-11) assisted on the Pioneer’s second goal.
Denver (24-13-2) will play Providence today for a berth in the Frozen Four.
