Work examines lives of activists Lynds

YOUNGSTOWN

Mark W. Weber and Stephen H. Paschen are announcing the publication of their new book, “Side by Side: Alice and Staughton Lynd, the Ohio Years.”

The book is a study of the lives of the Lynds and their dedication to promoting social justice. The authors examine the Lynds’ practice of accompaniment, a form of political activism in which they lived in the troubled community, helping steelworkers and others cope with the devastating closure of steel mills in the Mahoning Valley from 1977 to 1981.

Before moving to Youngstown, the Quaker couple worked in Central America and Israel, where they fought for the rights of Palestinian Arabs residing in the West Bank.

They also fought for prisoners’ rights after the infamous 1993 uprising at a Lucasville, Ohio, prison. Their activism led to a landmark decision that improved certain living conditions for inmates.

Weber was the dean of libraries at Kent State University until he retired in 2010. He has worked with the Lynds since 1998.

Paschen was an associate professor and archivist at KSU until he retired in 2013.
