Lecture on how to prevent falls

WARREN

Warren SCOPE, 220 West Market St., will offer a free 60-minute lecture on how to prevent falls, the No. 1 cause of emergency-room admissions, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The featured speaker will be M. Ben Melnykovich, RN, BSAS, prevention coordinator of the Trauma Center at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

A free lunch will follow the lecture. Participants are asked to register at 330-399-1352 ahead of the event to provide an accurate count.

MLK memorial service April 7

YOUNGSTOWN

The Baptist Pastors’ Council of Youngstown will sponsor a memorial service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “From Selma to Significance,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 7 in the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda, 120 Market St.

King was assassinated April 4, 1968.

Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Morris W. Lee, pastor of Third Baptist Church.

Pastor Kevin Crum Sr. is council president.

Simply Slavic fest

YOUNGSTOWN

The confirmation deadline for previous vendors is April 15 for participation in the 5th Annual Simply Slavic festival from noon to 11 p.m. June 20 on Federal Plaza, downtown Youngstown.

Applications from new vendors will be accepted after April 15 and questions are welcome at any time.

Organizers are seeking authentic Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents.

Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors.

Public review set

YOUNGSTOWN

Eastgate Regional Council of Governments will have a public review meeting for the draft fiscal years 2016-2019 Transportation Improvement Plan for Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The meeting is 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate’s office, 100 E. Federal St., Suite 1000.

Copies of the draft plan will be available for review and Eastgate staff members will be on hand to answer questions. Copies of the plan also are available for public viewing Thursday through April 17 at the Mahoning County Engineer’s office, 940 Bears Den Road, the Trumbull County Engineer’s office, 650 N. River Road NW, Warren, and at Eastgate’s office, as well as at www.eastgatecog.org.

The plan includes a description of federal aid highway, bridge, non-motorized and transit improvements scheduled over the next four years. For information, call 330-779-3800.

Road work to start

SALEM

Work is expected to begin Friday on the West State Street bridge-deck replacement project, says the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Two-way traffic will be maintained with flaggers until late June, when the structure will be closed until late November. The road is expected to be closed and traffic detoured for 140 days.

ODOT’s contractor for this $3 million project is Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Co., Youngstown. Completion date is June 2016.
