OSU’s Miller being questioned about photo

COLUMBUS

Ohio State’s compliance office is investigating whether quarterback Braxton Miller broke any NCAA rules when he posed for a picture on social media with health-care and nutritional products.

Miller was pictured on Instagram on Tuesday night with products from AdvoCare.

Miller is a graduate student who started three seasons for the Buckeyes but missed all of the Buckeyes’ championship season last year after shoulder surgery. He is expected to play this fall after rehabbing through spring workouts.

Student-athletes are permitted to hold jobs outside of school but they cannot use their status with a college team to sell products.

Steelers stadium keeps name despite merger

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ football stadium will keep the name Heinz Field despite the company’s planned merger with Kraft Foods Group.

Pittsburgh-based H.J. Heinz Co. says if the merger announced Wednesday is approved, the new company will be Kraft Heinz Co.

But Heinz senior vice president Michael Mullen confirms that the stadium will remain named Heinz Field.

The Heinz Co. signed a $57 million, 20-year naming rights deal when the stadium opened in 2001. That means the stadium will keep the name for at least six more years.

Steelers agree to keep WR Heyward-Bey

The Steelers signed receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey to a one-year contract Thursday.

Heyward-Bey played last season for the Steelers, also on a one-year contract. He served as the team’s fifth receiver, played in all 16 games, with one start, and had three receptions for 33 yards.

Heyward-Bey did not make the 53-man roster for his abilities as a receiver, though. He impressed head coach Mike Tomlin during the preseason when he showed a willingness to play and play well on special teams.

Heyward-Bey is entering his seventh NFL season.

He was the No. 7 overall pick of the Oakland Raiders and played his first four seasons with them. He spent the 2013 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

In six NFL seasons, Heyward-Bey has 172 receptions for 2,413 yards and 12 touchdowns.

No. 1 pick Aiken had Tommy John surgery

Brady Aiken, the hard-throwing lefty who didn’t sign after being last year’s No. 1 draft pick by the Houston Astros, has announced he had Tommy John surgery.

The 18-year-old Aiken was pitching for the IMG Academy to prepare for this year’s draft. Aiken wrote an essay that was published Thursday on The Player’s Tribune website in which he says he is “extremely disappointed” about tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Aiken, who attended Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, went first overall last June despite some concerns about his elbow. Aiken and the Astros failed to agree to contract terms, but he writes that he “can honestly say I don’t regret not signing.”

Aiken realized something was wrong with his elbow when he made his first start last week at IMG, a private training institute in Florida.
