Human remains found

WARREN

A contractor doing work in a vacant upstairs apartment in a house at 540 E. Market St. found human remains inside a wall, police report.

Police were called at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Detectives are investigating. The office space downstairs is also vacant, police said. Police said they could not tell if the adult remains are from a man or woman.

Burnt toast

The Youngstown Fire Department responded to the Rescue Mission about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, but the emergency was actually no emergency. Firefighters gave the all-clear after discovering it was only burnt toast that had set off the smoke alarms, the fire department said.

Lowellville school board will adjourn to executive session during a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in the library/media center, 52 Rocket Place, to discuss appointment and/or employment, dismissal or discipline of employees. Action will be taken.

Drunken driving

A Poland woman faces multiple felony charges after a drunken driving incident Thursday.

Sara Laughlin, 24, of Youngstown-Poland Road is charged with felony counts of attempted vandalism, intimidation and harassment with a bodily substance. She is charged with misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle Impaired, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

The charges stem from an incident after she was pulled over for speeding on Market Street. She is in the Mahoning County jail pending an appearance in Mahoning County Area Court here.

Dog stunned to death

Two police officers used a stun weapon on a dog before it died Wednesday evening. Police were called to a Creed Circle home where the dog was attacking homeowners and pets, a report says. Police called for the dog warden while trying to capture it, noting the dog showed signs of aggressiveness, foamed at the mouth, and had no collar or tags. Police started stunning the dog after it charged at them and it became immobile after four times. Betty Cleland, 56, of Youngstown arrived to claim responsibility for the dog. She was issued a criminal summons for having the dog running.

Boyfriend assault

A township man faces felony charges after a domestic violence incident.

Police responded to a Carter Circle apartment Wednesday after a woman said her boyfriend assaulted her.

Matthew Lombel, 33, is charged with domestic violence, assault and disrupting public services.

The woman told police that Lombel hit, bit, choked and jumped on her. He also made threats and destroyed things in the apartment, a report says. She escaped and ran to a neighbor’s apartment, and was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

Lombel is on parole. The felony domestic-violence charge stems from a conviction on a prior domestic violence charge, police said. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Drugs found in car

GIRARD

Spencer A. Brown, 26, of East Boston Avenue in Youngstown, was released from the Trumbull County jail Thursday after posting $12,500 bond on charges of possession of heroin and cocaine after a traffic stop in Liberty Wednesday night.

A Liberty police officer said he made a traffic stop on Belmont Avenue at Liberty Street at 11:44 p.m. and found the drugs in the car. Brown was not required to enter a plea to the charges during his arraignment Thursday in Girard Municipal Court because the charges are felonies. If convicted, Brown could get more than eight years in prison.

Assault, robbery

CAMPBELL

Two Youngstown residents will appear in court today, accused in an attack Wednesday evening on a 73-year-old Poland man at Roosevelt Park.

Witnesses and the victim told police two men struck the victim from behind. They continued beating the man while he was on the ground, and took his wallet. They fled in a gold Pontiac sedan.

A report says investigations led police to Nathaniel Thompson Jr., 18, and his girlfriend, Sidney Figinsky, 20, who drove the vehicle, based on witness accounts. Both were taken to the Mahoning County jail on aggravated-robbery charges.

The victim suffered heavy bleeding from the head and bruises on his knee and was taken to a hospital. Sgt. Kevin Sferra said U.S. marshals are looking for two more suspects.

Multiple OVI offenses

EAST LIVERPOOL

State troopers with the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a man they arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs at about 4:05 p.m. Wednesday on state Route 7 near Kountz Road has seven previous drunken driving offenses.

Joseph J. Recek Jr., 56, of Wellsville was taken into custody after failing a field sobriety test, a news release said.

He was taken to the Columbiana County jail.

Water advisory lifted

HOWLAND

Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer’s office Thursday lifted the boil-water advisory for township residents living in the Hunt Club Trail, Fox Hound Run and Hawks Landing areas.
