UPDATE | Cincinnati firefighter dies after Ohio apartment blaze

CINCINNATI (AP) — Authorities in Cincinnati say a 29-year veteran firefighter has died of injuries suffered during rescue efforts in a southwest Ohio apartment complex blaze.

The city says Daryl Gordon, 54, died at a hospital this morning after being pulled from a building. Chief Richard Braun says the department is mourning the loss of a hero.

Authorities said earlier the firefighter was removed by stretcher after apparently falling down an elevator shaft.

Another firefighter was taken to a hospital after suffering second-degree burns. There was no immediate update on his condition.

The fire was reported at about 5:45 a.m. today at King Towers complex. Firefighters rescued upper-floor residents by ladder. Authorities said all residents were safe, but several residents were treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause was under investigation.
