Mahoning commissioners support return of mail delivery through Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners this morning gave their support to a U.S. House of Representatives bill, whose goal is to restore overnight mail delivery to the U.S. Postal Service.

The commissioners acted as Youngstown faces mail-delivery delays due to the closing this summer of its downtown mail processing and distribution center and the routing of its mail to Cleveland for processing.

The bill, known as HR 784 and titled the Overnight Delivery Act, was introduced Feb. 5 by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut, and had 59 initial co-sponsors.

“At a time when millions of Americans are still struggling to pay the bills, it would be particularly inopportune for USPS to close more facilities and cut jobs,” DeLauro said.

“More closings would also hurt businesses that depend on overnight mail delivery to reach their customers,” she added.
