Contractor extradited from Iraq pleads guilty in Ohio

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A defense attorney says a man extradited from Iraq in a military contract bribery case has pleaded guilty to three charges in an agreement with federal prosecutors.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Rose in Dayton plans sentencing July 9 for Metin Atilan. Atty. Nick Gounaris says the two sides agreed to ask the judge for a sentencing range of 30 to 63 months with a $1 million fine.

Atilan was charged with conspiring to pay bribes and kickbacks to obtain supply contracts associated with U.S. military operations in and around Iraq. He has pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to commit wire fraud count and two other charges related to leaving the country after his arrest.

U.S. authorities said Atilan’s was the first extradition from Iraq under a 1936 treaty.
