BOARDMAN

A township man was arraigned in Mahoning County Area Court here on fifth-degree felony charges of breaking and entering and vandalism.

Police say Robert Johnson, 48, of South Avenue, broke into the Sparkle Market at 4121 South Ave. between Thursday night and Friday morning. Surveillance video caught the suspect climbing through a window, jumping over a counter and filling garbage bags with cigarette cartons valued at $1,186. He also reportedly caused $600 damage to a window.

He is in the Mahoning County jail, pending another court appearance.

Beaten, robbed

CAMPBELL

A 73-year-old man was beaten and robbed while walking in Roosevelt Park at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police said Wednesday night there are four suspects in the case, and they were questioning people.

The man, who lives in Campbell, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with head trauma and possible internal injuries, they said.

They said more information would be available today.

2 face drug charges

Dior Robinson Jr., 20, of Youngstown and Cierra Sims-Newby, 23, of Hermitage, Pa., were arrested Wednesday on drug charges. According to a police report, Robinson was driving a silver Saturn sedan, which was pulled over for an illegal U-turn in the middle of Pin Oaks Place. Police smelled a strong odor of marijuana as Robinson was placed under arrest for having no valid driver’s license. Sims-Newby was a passenger and was asked to step out of the vehicle.

Police found 2.1 grams of suspected marijuana in the center console. Police also found 1.7 grams of suspected marijuana on Sims-Newby. Two hydrocodone pills were found in her purse.

They are both charged with misdemeanor drug paraphernalia and drug possession. Sims-Newby also is charged with felony drug possession.

OVI checkpoint

The Trumbull County OVI Task Force will be conducting a checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday on West Market Street in Warren and Warren Township, according to a news release from the task force.

Arson on church land

BOARDMAN

Township police and fire officials are investigating an arson on a church’s property.

An employee at Bridge of Hope Church, 7580 Glenwood Ave., reported to police Tuesday that a dumpster on the church’s property was burned, resulting in about $800 worth of damage.
