Memorial park for victims of Ohio school shooting in works

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) — A committee is working to raise funds and finalize design plans for a memorial park to honor the victims of a 2012 school shooting here.

Committee members presented the design this week to the Chardon School Board, The News-Herald in Willoughby reported. The memorial will honor the three students killed and several others injured during a shooting at Chardon High School on Feb. 27, 2012.

Committee members said they won’t set a construction date for the park until they reach their funding goal of $300,000. The committee has also teamed up with a local nonprofit for the project.

The memorial is expected to be constructed on park land near a district elementary school. Initial designs include an updated nature path, playground and outdoor fitness center.

Chardon School Board President Guy Wilson said he supports the memorial and called it very appropriate.

Katie Kalis, a Chardon High School senior who sits on the committee, said she likes the living aspect of the proposed memorial.

“People can go there, reflect and have fun there with their families,” she said.

T.J. Lane, 20, pleaded guilty to the shootings and is serving three life sentences.
