Mathews High School softball coach Jim Nicula will be the guest speaker at Monday’s weekly Curbstone Coaches luncheon at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza.

The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Tickets on sale for Curbstone HOF event

Former world lightweight champion and International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini will speak at the 48th Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame banquet on May 3 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center.

The 2015 class includes Phil Adams (softball), Larry Davis (tennis, coach), Pat Gaia (special award), Tim Graham (bowling), Greg Gulas (contribution to sports), John Linden (all-around award), Bill Narduzzi (posthumous/football), Pat Narduzzi (football), Bob Patton (basketball, coach), Earnie Shavers (boxing), Sherri Skelton (bowling) and Kenny Smith (baseball).

YSU softball takes two from Detroit

The Youngstown State Penguins defeated the Detroit Titans 10-7 and 5-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday at YSU. In game one the Penguins (10-12) scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 5-3 Titans lead. The rally was capped off by a Stevie Taylor (South Range) two-run double. Brittney Moffatt went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. In game two the Penguins shut down the Titans led by Kayla Haslett. Haslett pitched a complete game giving up just six hits and striking out five. Taylor and Sarah Dowd each had home runs to lead the offense.

YSU baseball falls to Valparaiso

Shane Willoughby had two hits and two runs scored but the Penguins fell to the Valparaiso Crusaders at Valparaiso 10-8. Jared Wrighttook the loss for the Penguins. The Crusaders scored three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to seal the victory. The two teams play today at 1 p.m.

Pole vault clinic to be held at YSU March 29

The greater Youngstown track officials association is hosting a free pole vault clinic at the WATTS on the campus of Youngstown State University on March 29 from 2-4p.m. Deb Satterfield and BJ Duckworth will lead the event.

This clinic is open to all OHSAA officials as well as coaches and will count as a local rules interpretation credit. Parking will be available in the M5 parking lot, directly behind the WATTS.

Nash announces retirement from NBA

Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash has announced his retirement after a 19-year NBA career that included two MVP awards. The 41-year-old Canadian made the announcement Saturday in a letter on The Players’ Tribune, a website where he is a senior producer. Nash won MVP awards in 2005 and 2006 in Phoenix during a dominant stretch as the catalyst for the Suns’ up-tempo offense.

The eight-time All-Star is third in NBA history with 10,335 assists, trailing only John Stockton and Jason Kidd.

Mexican wrestler dies from hit in the ring

A Mexican professional wrestler, died early Saturday from a hit suffered in the ring, the Baja California state prosecutor’s office said. Pedro Aguayo Ramirez went limp on the ropes after a blow that appeared to have hit his neck, according to video.

He was in a team matchup against another popular wrestling personality, Oscar Gutierrez, known as Rey Misterio, Jr. The state prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation into possible manslaughter.
