Ohio college baseball players a big hit as school tutors

COLUMBUS (AP) — Baseball players for Ohio Dominican College have been big hits as tutors for elementary school students in a suburban Columbus district.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the tradition of baseball players from the Ohio college volunteering at the school in the Gahanna-Jefferson district began in 2001, with one-on-one tutoring started in 2006. Around 20 players have been volunteering at Royal Manor Elementary School during the current school year.

One of the players has built a rapport with a first-grader who has improved her reading skills with his help. Kyle Tisdale, 22, says the help he’s provided to her is “a big deal” for both him and the girl.

Ohio Dominican’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday.
