Columbus challenging state traffic camera law

COLUMBUS

Ohio’s largest city is the latest one to challenge the constitutionality of a state traffic camera law that the cities say would effectively ban red-light cameras by requiring a police officer’s presence when photo enforcement is used.

Columbus’ lawsuit filed Friday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court is similar to ones filed by cities including Dayton, Springfield, Akron and Toledo. They argue that they should be able to set their own policies.

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that cities have authority to use cameras to ticket speeders and red-light runners.
