BOARDMAN
The Minnie B. Thompson Foundation Inc. will host a fund-raising event for its scholarship fund for this academic year.
The inaugural masquerade gala begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at The Georgetown Banquet Center, 5945 South Ave. Dinner is served at 7 p.m.
The foundation’s 2014 scholarship recipient will be acknowledged, and three local people will be honored for their contributions in religion, civic engagement and the arts.
The foundation is named in honor of the late Minnie B. Thompson, who was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church on Youngstown’s North Side for more than 60 years, and a trusted leader in the community through her involvement with numerous service organizations.
Growing up during the Jim Crow era in the segregated South, Thompson was able to obtain only a third-grade education, according to a news release.
She realized the life opportunities that would be unavailable to those who did not received an adequate education. She always stressed education’s importance to her children, grandchildren, and the countless other youth she mentored during her life.
To date, the foundation has awarded $3,000 in academic scholarships to Mahoning Valley students.
Tickets are $45 per person and $80 per couple. To purchase tickets or make a donation, call 330-219-3701. For information, go to the website minniebthompsonfoundation.com or on Facebook at Facebook.com/MBTFoundation.
