Teen indicted for Winona Avenue homicide

A Mahoning County grand jury Thursday indicted a West Side teenager on charges of murder and involuntary manslaughter in an August homicide.

David Jenkins, 18, of Manchester Avenue, is charged in the Aug. 17, 2014, death of Shawn Cortez on Winona Avenue. He also faces charges of aggravated riot and felonious assault.

Police have charged 15 people in connection with the death of Cortez, who they say was killed during a street brawl on the South Side between two feuding families. Several portions of the brawl were captured on cellphone video. Those charges include involuntary manslaughter and aggravated riot.

One of those indicted earlier on the same charges is Jenkins’ brother, Dejon Jenkins, 19, who also faces a charge of murder in the death of Cortez.

David Jenkins was charged as a juvenile, but since his case was bound over to common pleas court, he will now be tried as an adult.

The grand jury also handed up indictments against these people on these charges:

Tyler Karabin, 22, Staatz Drive, Austintown, aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, three counts being a felon in possession of a firearm and criminal damaging.

Michael Mele, 27, Wingate Avenue, theft, passing bad checks.

Kayla M. Andrews, 23, of Oakdale, Pa., theft and passing bad checks.

Omar Robinson, 34, West Dennick Avenue, felonious assault with a firearm specification.

Christopher Carlson, 31, Franklin, Pa., possession of heroin.

Jonathan A. Mangas, 35, Gault Road, North Jackson, possession of cocaine, possession of heroin, illegal use or possession of drug abuse instruments and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Melvin Vaughn, 45, Oak Street, burglary.

Thomasina Abanathey, 50, Kenneth Street, passing bad checks.

Michael D. Herman, 35, Glenwood Avenue, assault, theft and resisting arrest.

Robert Datchuk, 32, Prospect Street, Girard, assault.

Jakob L. Hendricks, 25, Alliance, possession of drugs and two counts driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Lori Waigand, 33, Red Tail Hawk Court, Boardman, possession of heroin, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal use or possession of drug abuse instruments.

Steven K. Timmins, 31, East Lewis Street, Struthers, theft and misuse of credit cards.

Tiffany P. Aitken, 33, Pearl Street, Leetonia, theft of drugs.

Jeremy R. Hulick, 39, Prospect Street, Lisbon, theft of drugs.

Tonya A. McDonald, 36, Helena Avenue, Youngstown, possession of cocaine, possession of drugs and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Joseph J. Williams, 60, Berkley Avenue, Youngstown, two counts felonious assault, attempted murder with firearm specifications and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Timothy L. Conzett Jr., 25, Lyden Avenue, Struthers, three counts felonious assault with firearm specifications.

John A. Hileman, 68, New Buffalo Road, North Lima, theft.

Michael Ramun, 31, Sturbridge Place, Poland, possession of heroin.

Tamara D. Julious, 30, Elliot Lane, four counts of endangering children.

Albert W. Barnette, 40, Elliot Lane, four counts of endangering children.
