Matthew Sammartino named Ursuline High School principal

YOUNGSTOWN

Matthew Sammartino, assistant principal of Ursuline High School, will become the school’s principal, effective July 1.

The Rev. Richard Murphy, president of Ursuline, made the announcement this morning. Sammartino will be the school’s 14th principal in its 109-year history.

“With great pleasure, I am able to announce that the Ursuline High School community will be able to enjoy a seamless transition in effective administrative leadership from Ms. Patricia Fleming, who will be retiring June 30 after 20 years of exemplary stewardship of Ursuline’s programs, to Mr. Sammartino, who has exhibited outstanding leadership qualities since joining the Ursuline Family in 2000,” Father Murphy said in a news release.

Father Murphy said, Sammartino represented to the search committee a keen understanding of the role of a modern-day Catholic high school principal, “a powerful dedication to the community of staff, students, parents, alumni and friends of Ursuline whom he will serve, and a comprehensive vision of progressive academic and extra-curricular success for all of our constituents. He knows the challenges facing Catholic education today and embraces the opportunities a school rich in tradition and support like Ursuline affords him as he prepares for his new responsibility. He was the unanimous, enthusiastic choice of a well-prepared search committee.”

Sammartino will meet at 3 p.m. today at the school with Ursuline stakeholders and the press.

“I hope all of us who love Ursuline will extend to Matt every support and prayers,” Father Murphy said. “We welcome his contribution to our legacy of educational excellence for the Glory of God Alone.”
