Lederman's comedy gets down and dirty
By John Benson
There are a few things to know about comedian Annie Lederman.
For example, she’s somewhat dirty. Talking about sex is her forte, and she’s not — despite some confused folks who may not understand her running joke — transgender.
Seen recently on MTV’s hilarious series “Girl Code,” the New York City funny lady is about to make her Buckeye State debut with shows Friday and Saturday at The Comedy Cellar at Mojo’s in Austintown.
“This is the biggest gig of my life,” said Lederman, calling from Boston. “I’m just kidding. I’m excited to come to Youngstown. People keep telling me I’m on my way to Oldstown, so hiyo.
“We’re going there to do some comedy. We’re going to tell some jokes. I think they’ll be funny. You never know. I like to just do really unfunny jokes. I want the crowd to cry, honestly.”
Crying with laughter is what Lederman has been bringing audiences to for the past handful of years. She moved to the Big Apple in the late 2000s before a key gig at Montreal’s “Just For Laughs Comedy Festival” opened doors.
She appeared on E!’s “Chelsea Lately,” where she’s currently a regular, and “The Soup Investigates with Joel McHale.” Other credits include “Gotham Comedy Live.” After she landed on “Girl Code,” her stature started to increase.
Lederman is one of many women breaking ground in the comedy world. Still, she confesses to fixating too much time over the comment section posted below her YouTube clips.
“Listen, I like to wake up in the morning, make my coffee, read the comment section and then I rage for about 25 minutes,” Lederman said. “It’s a nightmare. You shouldn’t read the comment section, but sometimes it’s fun. I enjoy a good troll fighting every once in a while.”
Among the topics Lederman said she’ll be discussing in Youngstown are her family as well as personal struggles.
“I think I’m a little dark,” Lederman said. “And I talk a lot about being a recovering alcoholic. So I talk a lot about my old partying, drinking days and a lot about my crazy, partying sober days, which are not much different. It turned out drinking wasn’t the problem.”
The comic also said she talks a lot about sex.
“Don’t bring your kids unless you want me to teach them something,” she said.
When asked if she would feel comfortable about having the sex talk with a kid in the audience, Lederman laughed.
“Yeah, if you guys are feeling weird about it, I can do it,” she said. “I can’t promise the outcome, but they’ll probably be less traumatized if I tell them than if their parents tell them. Is there anything more humiliating?”
Hearing Lederman’s last name, it’s not hard to think about the many confusing conversations she’s had with people explaining she’s not related to David Letterman.
“Yeah, I didn’t have the good spelling,” Lederman said, laughing. “I got nothing out of it. I always tell people the way they can remember my last name is Annie Lederman is like David Letterman but with no Ts, and I point to my flat chest. Then I say there’s one D and let them figure it out. It has led to a lot of people thinking I’ve transitioned.”
She added: “I’m the Bruce Jenner of the Lederman Family.”
