UPDATE | Fire under control at Market Street asphalt company

YOUNGSTOWN — Although firefighters are battling thick smoke at a two alarm fire at a 706 1/2 Market St. asphalt business, Fire Chief John O’Neill said the fire at Asphalt Solutions is under control.

Crews first responded about 1:30 p.m. to the business and shortly after put in a second alarm. Crews tried to get inside to fight the fire but were pulled out because of heavy smoke and fire inside and explosions from gasoline container and propane tanks, O’Neill said.

A stretcher was brought for one firefighter who came out but he waved away paramedics and walked away.

There were several more explosions and towering flames and smoke. Flaming debris also set a small fire in a line of trees in a vacant lot across the street.

No one was injured.
