YOUNGSTOWN
A man who police say was carrying a loaded 9 mm handgun during a foot chase on the North Side late last week was arraigned in municipal court Monday.
Altay Baker, 18, was arraigned on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and receiving stolen property before Judge Robert Milich, who set his bond at $30,000.
Officers were called to a home in the 500 block of Catalina Avenue for a report of a fight involving a gunman about noon Friday. They found a man matching the description, later identified as Baker, 18, of Crandall Avenue, walking on Guadalupe Avenue.
Reports said when Baker saw officers, he started walking briskly toward Alameda Avenue and hid his right side from police, and then began running through several back yards on Alameda and Crandall avenues.
Officers followed him on foot and in vehicles, and one officer saw him holding something in a yard in the 400 block of Crandall. Police set up a perimeter and saw a set of footprints leading into a garage on Alameda Avenue. Police followed the tracks and found Baker, reports said. When he was searched, officers found 11 pills in a bottle and a bag of suspected marijuana.
In the yard on Crandall Avenue, police found a loaded 9 mm handgun. A records check found the gun had been reported stolen from Struthers, reports said.
Reports said when Baker was questioned by police, he admitted buying the gun from someone for $50 and that he did not know it had been stolen.
