Santana, Lindor lift Tribe past Padres

GOODYEAR, Ariz.

Carlos Santana hit his second home run of the spring and Francisco Lindor had an inside-the-park shot to lead the Indians past the Padres 4-2 on Sunday.

Trevor Bauer became the first Indians pitcher to go five innings this spring. He allowed a run-scoring double to Matt Kemp and a home run to Wil Myers, his second.

Bauer gave up an unearned run in the first after Myers reached on a throwing error by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall following a 10-pitch at-bat. Myers trotted home on Kemp’s double.

“That was a tough way to start the game,” Tribe manager Terry Francona said. “He continues to pound the strike zone. He’s been good. Very impressive.”

David Murphy had two hits, including an RBI single that put the Indians ahead.

Ian Kennedy pitched three innings for San Diego and gave up the inside-the-park homer to Lindor.

Lindor’s fly to deep center field landed on the warning track in front of Myers, who was fighting the wind and sun. The high bounce off the wall allowed the 21-year-old shortstop to beat the throw home with a headfirst slide.

Pirates 4, Orioles 2

BRADENTON, Fla.

Vance Worley pitched four scoreless innings, Gorkys Hernandez singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Sunday.

Orioles designated hitter Travis Snider had three singles against his former team.

Worley, who is competing with left-hander Jeff Locke for the Pirates’ fifth starter spot, struck out two and allowed two hits.

“I’m doing all right,” Worley said. “Would I like to be in the rotation? Absolutely. It’s all I know. I’ve pitched out of the bullpen a couple times, and I’m average at best. Not a great relief guy.”

Josh Harrison and Neil Walker opened the game with back-to-back doubles off Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen. Catcher Tony Sanchez chased Chen in the third inning with an RBI single to left to extend the lead.

Chen went 3 1-3 innings, his longest start of spring training, allowing seven hits and two runs.

“Hot, sticky day,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “He got his work in. He would give us a chance to win in the regular season.”
