UPDATE | Meacham rescinds auditor office raises

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Auditor Ralph T. Meacham has rescinded raises granted to selected auditor’s office staff members by his predecessor, Michael V. Sciortino, saying it would be financially irresponsible to uphold the raises with the current state of the budget.

The cancellation applies to raises given to both union and non-union employees.

Janet Szenborn, president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2533, the union representing auditor’s office employees, said the union respects Meacham’s decision.

She had previously said the raises granted to three union members violated the union contract.

Meacham said he’ll advertise the chief deputy auditor’s job by the end of the week.

Meacham fired Carol McFall from that job earlier this month because he said she didn’t meet his standards of transparency in responding to a Vindicator public records request regarding the raises.
