CAMPBELL

The city will host its annual Civic Day on March 27, a long-standing tradition for graduating seniors of Campbell Memorial High School.

The event invites students of the high school to spend a day with municipal and school-board officials to learn about the operation of government.

State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, will be guest speaker during a breakfast at 8:15 a.m. at the Campbell Municipal Building. Past speakers have included local judges and legislators.

“We are very pleased to welcome Ohio state Sen. Joe Schiavoni for this year’s Civic Day activities,” said Law Director Brian J. Macala. “We believe our students will benefit from his experiences in public service.”

In addition to spending the morning with a sponsoring official, a luncheon will take place at noon at the Roosevelt Park Community Center. After the luncheon, the students will conduct a mock city-council meeting.

The event is being coordinated by Macala, Clerk of Council Dina Hamilton, and Bret Abeid and Brian Danilov, government teachers at the high school. It is expected that 28 students will participate. Past participants in the event have gone on to serve the city as mayor, council members and judges.

“Civic Day is more than a day off for seniors; it is an educational experience as well,” said Macala. “This is a unique opportunity for our students to spend one-on-one time with a city official and observe and question how our local government functions.”
