Girl Scout cookies delivered to Warren area troops Friday

Thin Mints, Do-si-dos, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Samoas and Savannah Smiles addicts, begin salivating.

Girl Scout cookies by the thousands of boxes, longtime favorites and some new varieties, arrived via semi-trucks Friday at W. D. Packard Music Hall here and are arriving today at St. Michael Parish in Canfield to be picked up by local Girl Scout leaders for distribution to their troop members.

In the Warren area, 11,264 cases were picked up by representatives of 85 Girl Scout troops; and 4,467 cases are being picked up in Canfield for distribution for 50 troops, said Kendra Allen, business services coordinator for the Youngstown Office of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio.

With 12 boxes in each case, 188,772 boxes of cookies will be distributed in the Warren and Canfield areas; and nearly 3 million boxes will be delivered by GSNEO troops, the office said.

Some 1,800 of those boxes were sold and will be delivered by the 14 seventh-grade girls of Troop 80379 in the Vienna/Fowler area, said Caroline Crawford of Fowler, co-troop leader with Kathleen Wallace of Vienna.

Troop 80379 members also are manning booths from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Howland Giant Eagle store and from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Liberty Walmart; and Wednesday will set up from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mikeee’s Restaurant in the main terminal building of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

Robin Gelet and Bene’ Loomis, co-leaders of Troops 80865 and 80259, with members from Jefferson, Lincoln, McGuffey and Willard schools, picked up 345 cases containing 4,140 boxes of cookies.

Their troops will set up booths from noon to 2 p.m. next Saturday at Walgreen’s on West Market Street and from 4 to 7 p.m. March 22 at the Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue, both in Warren.

The 12 members of Troop 80344 in McDonald sold 2,500 boxes of cookies, said their troop leader, Candice Ward of McDonald, who rented a small moving van to transport the cookies.

Troop 80344 will set up booths Friday at the Giant Eagle store in Austintown and March 22 at Southern Park Mall in Boardman.

The girls have two weeks to deliver the cookies, Ward said.

Net proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program stay in Northeast Ohio and support girls’ chosen activities, community-service projects and adventures at camp and beyond, said Jane Christyson, GSNEO chief executive officer.
