Immigration agent probes status of Canfield man

Staff report

BOARDMAN

An arrest in the township led police to alert the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency Wednesday after they said a Canfield man tried to use fake information to obtain a driver’s license.

Eliezer De La Rosa Ramos, 24, of Turner Road, is in the Mahoning County jail without bond on a felony tampering-with-evidence charge.

An employee of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles office at 229 Boardman- Canfield Road reported to police that De La Rosa Ramos presented her with a fake permanent- residency card in an attempt to get an Ohio temporary driving permit and license plates.

De La Rosa Ramos told police, according to a police report, he came to the U.S. illegally about 10 years ago after he paid someone to get him into the country. He also reportedly told them he got the fake permanent-resident card and a Social Security number from a man identified only as Juan.

He said he intended to complete the steps to become a legal citizen, but could not afford it.

After questioning De La Rosa Ramos, police observed the resident identification card and noticed it was missing security features.

Township police then alerted an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who reported back that the information on the card came back to a different person. The customs agent also reported the Social Security number came back to a dead man from Indiana.
