Pin on a shamrock and try your luck. St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner. Here is a look at the major parties, parades and events in the area.
PARADES
Mahoning Valley St. Patrick’s Day parade, Market Street, Boardman, 1 p.m. Sunday. 2015 theme is for “The Love of Erin,” and Grand Marshal is Dick Coughlin. Between 25,000 and 30,000 people annually watch the massive parade, which is sponsored by The Vindicator and 21 WFMJ-TV. The parade begins on McClurg Road and heads north on Market Street to Southwoods Avenue. Dozens and dozens of political and community officials, municipal services, service and entertainment organizations march in the parade. In addition to Coughlin, the other 2015 parade honorees are Boardman Police Chief Jack Nichols, Lord Mayor of Kilkenny; Tom Eich, Ockerman Award; and Terry Brennan, Cleary Award.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Youngstown St. Patrick’s Day Beer Crawl, registration 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave. A trolley will travel a connecting path across all participating bars/restaurants to help participants get from one drink to the next; it will loop around downtown every 15 minutes. Each participating establishment will provide its own entertainment, drink and food specials. All proceeds from registration will benefit the Purple Cat/Golden String. Cost of registration is $4, which provides trolley access. A valid license/ID must be shown during registration. First 120 registrants will receive a T-shirt. Participants, with the possibility of more to be added, include: Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts; B&O Station; O’Donolds Downtown; Rust Belt Brewing Company Tap House; Warehouse 50; Avalon Downtown; Martini Brothers Burger Bar; Imbibe; Ryes Craft Beer and Whiskey Bar; The MVR; V2 Wine Bar Trattoria; and the Royal Oaks.
Leprechaun Lollapalooza, with activities in the Poland Library, and its bookstore and Kravitz Deli, all at 311 S. Main St., Poland, on Saturday. Come to the bookstore to receive a lucky coin and a discount on all books that day with the “lucky leprechaun” sale. Here is the schedule: 9 a.m., Kravitz Deli opens for breakfast; 10:30, meet the leprechaun in the library; 10:45, parade of leprechauns, with kids grade six and younger parading through the library in festive gear (each child who participates becomes eligible to win a book of Irish fairy tales); 11, St. Patrick’s story time in the library; 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., scavenger hunt in library for grades six and younger; noon, Irish music with Colleen McNally Harris and Harper Kirk, and lunch available for purchase at Kravitz; 1 p.m., story time with Captain McFinn in bookstore; 2, story time in the library; 3, performance by Burke Irish dancers; 3:30, corned beef, Lucky Charms and pickle-eating contests at Kravitz; and 4:30 to 5, complimentary cookies and Coca-Cola at Kravitz.
St. Patrick’s Day Trolley, meet at Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown; two tours — 1 to 2:30 and 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday. The 90-minute tour of the park wil llook for signs of spring greenery. Register/pay at the nature center. Cost for adults is $6 for Mahoning County residents and $9 for nonresidents, and those 12 and under or 60 and over, $4 for residents and $7 for non-residents.

Backyard Bar and Grill, 8942 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, Poland. Pre St. Patty’s party with entertainment by After Hours 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday. A St. Patrick’s Day party will start at 11 a.m. Tuesday and continue through the night.

Chipper’s Sports Bar and Grill, 5 N. Edgehill Ave., Youngstown, St. Patrick’s Day extravaganza will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday with performances from 7Stone, Rule of Two, A Damn Shame, Zero.Set.Memory and After the Invasion.
Irish Bob’s Pub, 3602 South Ave., Youngstown. Kitchen open 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday after the St. Patrick’s Day parade. On Tuesday, festivities will include a breakfast buffet ($5.99) from 6 to 10 a.m. and lunch/dinners 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., face painting with Patty at 10 a.m., and performances from the Ed “Eamonn” Knuff and the Dead Maggies from 2 to 8 p.m. and Universal Pulse at 9.
Kravitz Deli, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty, offers an extended weekend of Irish food, entertainment and festivities. On Friday, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring an old Dublin fish fry and entertainment with County Mayo ($2 cover), 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, open 9 a.m to 9 p.m. for St. Reuben’s Day and entertainment with County Mayo ($2 cover), 6 to 9 p.m.; Sunday, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a keg and corned-beef brunch and entertainment from DJ Patrick O’Tucci 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday, open 9 a.m.- to 10 p.m. for a St. Paddy’s warm-up day with special Irish menu food specials and traditional Irish folk songs with audience participation with Lou Rafferty and Company ($2 cover), 6 to 9 p.m.; and Tuesday, open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. for St. Patrick’s Day with entertainment from DJ Pat O’Tucci, noon-3 p.m., Colleen McNally Harris and Harper Kirk, 4 to 6, and the only area appearance of Brady’s Leap, 7 to 10.
Magic Tree Pub and Eatery, 7463 South Ave, Boardman. Irish food specials will be offered Sunday through Tuesday. Festivities will include Graphic Pink band, 9 p.m. Saturday; Sunday, open at 9 a.m. for a “Kegs & Eggs” pre-parade party and entertainment at 10 a.m. with Shaffer Brothers, the Ohio Bagpiper, Burke School of Irish Dancers and Infini-Tribe Hoola Hooper Group, and after-parade party with The Dead Maggies at 5 p.m.; Tuesday, open at 9 a.m. for kegs and eggs, and entertainment from Rose & Thistle band and Burke School of Irish Dancers at 2 p.m. and the Chardon Polka Band at 5.
Martini Brothers Burger Bar, 110 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will host festivities Friday through Wednesday morning with Irish food and drinks, live music and DJ’s, dancing, green beer and more. Schedule of events includes: Friday, a “tap takeover” with Irish beers on tap, traditional Irish food specials, and entertainment with DJ Johnny Russo until 2:30 a.m.; Saturday, more Irish beer and food and entertainment by DJ Brandon with New York’s Own, 10 p.m.; Sunday, “St. Practice Day” with green beer and other drink specials, and entertainment with Shultz and the I.C., 8 p.m.; Monday, food and drink specials and entertainment with DJ Hootie, 9 p.m.; and Tuesday, opening at 5:30 a.m. for Pints and Pancakes until 11:30 a.m., and entertainment from Blue Through Branches at 2 p.m., East 9th at 4 p.m., Baxter Burgundy at 7 p.m., and HipHopAnonymous at 10 p.m.

Mojo’s Pub and Grill, 6292 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Doors open at 11 a.m. Tuesday with drink and food specials and live music by Rich Oswald.
O’Donold’s Irish Pub, 6000 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. The St. Patrick’s Day (and weekend) celebration at the Austintown location is the largest in the area, with festivities inside the bar and also in a massive tent that will be set up in the parking lot of Austintown Plaza. The weekend will begin with the St. Baldrick’s Day celebration on Saturday. Events will include a head-shaving event to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, first annual St. Patty’s 5K and 1 mile Fun Run (sign up at gopherarun.com) at noon, and live music from County Mayo, Bridget Yurcisin, Phoenix Rising, Baroque Monody, Jay Byrd, The Rage, DJ Fish, 80’s Proof, Harvey Wall Banger, Jordan DePaul Band, Hoss and The Juggernauts, Idle Shades, Ryan Ross with Syndicate, and Baxter Burgundy with Courtney Waskins. Events for the official holiday on Tuesday will begin at 5:30 a.m. and include traditional Irish stepdancers, bagpipers and cuisine and green beer. Musical performances include: The Shaffer Brothers, 8:30-11 a.m.; Bastard Bearded Irishmen, 2-4 p.m.; 80’s Proof, 4-6 p.m.; The Rage, 6-8 p.m.; and Graphic Pink, 9-11:30 p.m. Irish stepdancers will perform at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and bagpipers will perform at roughly 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

A “Downtown Green Season” party with the Dead Maggies will be 6-10 p.m. Saturday. For the official holiday on Tuesday, O’Donold’s will open at 5:30 a.m. for kegs and eggs and green beer. Entertainment will include The Jim Frank Irish Trio at 10 a.m. to noon; Lady K and the Gents, 2-3 p.m.; County Mayo, 7-10 p.m.; plus bagpipers, 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.; and Irish step dancers, noon and 5 p.m.
Quaker Steak and Lube, 5800 Interstate Blvd., Austintown, St. Patrick’s Day entertainment from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Face painting will be offered from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Entertainment will include, at the Handlebar: Captain John Stout 8-10 a.m., County Mayo Irish Band 10-1p.m., Donegal Doggs 1:30-3:30, Rogues of Rafferty 3:30-5:30, Tara’s Frie 5:30-7:30; and at the Brickyard, Jeff Welsh 11 a.m-1 p.m., Jim Golen 1-3, and DJ Mark Anthony 3-7.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will include a post-parade party on Sunday that will include entertainment from Terry Dach at 12:30 p.m., County Mayo Irish Band at 2:30, and a performance from Irish dancers at 4:15; Entertainment on Tuesday includes Rick Blanco and Colleen McNally O’Harris at 10 a.m., Dach at 12:30 p.m., County Mayo at 2:30, Irish dancers performance at 5, Twisted Wires at 5:30, and karaoke with MVP Entertainment at 8.

St. George Croatian Center, 3200 Vestal Road, Youngstown, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will feature Guys Without Ties Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Trivia will be from 3-4 p.m. with prizes. Food and drink specials will be available. $3 admission fee.
North Country Brewing Company, 141 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, Pa., performance by County Mayo Irish Band 7 to 10 p.m. Monday.
V2 Wine Bar Trattoria, 100 W. Federal St., Youngstown, “ShamRock on the Block” St. Patrick’s day party and 4th annual benefit for autism will start 2 p.m. Tuesday. There will be drink specials, T-shirts and giveaways. Entertainment in an outdoor tent will include performances from the Spells 2-4 p.m., Trainwreck 5-8, and the Gary Markasky Project 9-midnight; and inside with Esto Jazz 5-8 p.m. and DJ Jay D 10-2 a.m.
Warehouse 50, 50 W. Federal St., Youngstown, “St. Patrick’s Day 2015 on the Plaza” on Tuesday welcomes all ages for a free event with a heated outside tent with outside food, bar and beer tubs. The Huckin’ Fillbillies will perform 3-6 p.m. and the House Band, 7-11.
OTHER EVENTS
Night Owl Story Time, Boardman library, 7680 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, 6 p.m. Tuesday. The evening event that includes finger plays, stories, and a craft activity for children ages 3 to 5 will have a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.
MetroMutts: St. Patrick’s Day Hike, meet at Pioneer Pavilion, 976 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Dogs and their owners are invited to wear green during a hike around Lake Cohasset. Cookies and treats for dogs and their people will be available at the pavilion after the hike. Local animal shelters will be on hand with some of their adoptables. Hike has a moderate rating, 3 miles. The event is free, but donations to MetroMutts are accepted.
The Ides of March Hike, meet at Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The moderate, 3 mile hike will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the coming of spring.
