POLAND

Township trustees are moving forward on several projects.

The board voted Wednesday to award an $18,500 contract to Everbrite Power Sweeping for street-sweeping that is set to take place on township and village roads within the next several weeks. Road Superintendent Tom Monus urged the board to take action on this so road crews can begin hot-patching potholes as soon as possible.

Trustees are in the process of putting together a “wish list” of roads to pave and encouraged residents to get in touch with them about problem areas.

Trustees also began preparations for next year’s winter weather. They voted to participate in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s summer salt-purchasing program. Through that program, communities typically get road salt at cheaper rates than if they wait until later in the year when salt is in high demand.

Township officials have not yet decided how much salt will be purchased through the program.

The township awarded another contract to Master Renovations Inc. The $3,621 contract is for demolition of a vacant house at 2273 Clyde St. that burned last year. Residents have brought the issue to trustees at previous meetings, saying that the property is an eyesore and a danger. Republic Services, which operates the Carbon Limestone Landfill in the township, will cover an additional cost of about $800 for the project.

An additional $16,928 expenditure was approved so the township can continue its lease agreement with the Mahoning County solid waste district for the drop-off recycling center on Clingan Road.

Trustees also voted to apply for a CVS Pharmacy grant that would provide the township with a free prescription drop-off box that would be located in the township government building on Dobbins Road.

“If one person uses it, I don’t care — it’s one more bottle that’s not on the street,” Trustee Eric Ungaro said.

If the township doesn’t get the grant, the township will purchase a box.
