YSU baseball gets first win of season at ISU

The Youngstown State baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning and got a strong effort from its bullpen to defeat Indiana State, 8-5, at Grand Park Monday afternoon.
Jason Shirley drove in three runs and Frank Califano, Brent Gillespie and Shane Willoughby each had two hits for YSU (1-4). Eight different Penguins had hits and Youngstown State went 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The teams split their weather-shortened series, with YSU improving to 2-1 all-time against Indiana State. Youngstown State beat ISU in the Bloomington Regional last year.
Phantoms’ Connor earns weekly honor

Youngstown Phantoms forward Kyle Connor was named CCM forward of the week, the USHL announced on Monday.
He was joined by defenseman Carson Vance of the Chicago Steel and goalie Ben Blakcer of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in earning players of the week honors.
Connor, 18, recorded seven points (3g, 4a) to lead the Phantoms to a two-game weekend sweep of the Sioux Falls Stampede and extend the team’s winning streak to 12 games. He recorded a career-high five points (2g, 3a) in Friday’s 7-3 victory. Connor then produced his third straight multi-point game with two points (1g, 1a) in Saturday’s 6-2 win.
He leads the USHL in scoring with 61 points (25g, 36a) through 45 games this season.
West Branch’s Wells recognized at Malone
Malone University centerfielder Brenden Wells has earned the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (GLIAC) south division player of the week award after leading the Pioneers to an 8-5 record during the squad’s season-opening trip to the Tucson Invitational.
Wells, a sophomore from West Branch High School, has opened the year on a 13-game hitting streak. The leadoff hitter, who transferred to from Division I Marshall University, compiled a .509 (27-for-53) batting average in Arizona with five doubles, three triples and 17 RBIs. He also scored 17 runs and swiped four bases last week.

Geno Petrus of Poland High School has decided to continue his football career at Ohio Dominican University.
Tickets on sale for Canfield vs. Hubbard
Canfield High School is selling tickets for the Division II district semifinal game between Canfield and Hubbard at Warren Harding High School.
The game is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets will be on sale all week in the Canfield High School athletic office. Advanced student tickets are $4, advanced adult tickets are $6. All tickets are $6 at the door.
Western Reserve boys and girls tickets on sale
Western Reserve High School is selling tickets for the upcoming boys and girls tournament games.
The boys team will be playing St. Thomas Aquinas in a district semifinal today at 7 p.m. at Struthers Fieldhouse. Presale student tickets are available for $4 and presale adult tickets for $6. All tickets are $6 at the door. Tickets are on sale in the high school office today from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The girls team will be playing Cuyahoga Heights in a district semifinal Thursday at 7 p.m. at Massillon Perry High School. Presale tickets are available for $7. All tickets are $8 at the door. Tickets are on sale in the high school through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The McDonald Sideliners will meet at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the high school. Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to attend.
