Julian Lanier scored 33 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Howland High boys basketball team fell to Garfield Heights, 86-66, Sunday in the Division I tournament.
Branden Johnson and Frankie Hughes scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, for Garfield Heights.
Curbstone to hear Bowers-Collins

Dorothy Bowers-Collins, a former Youngstown State University women’s basketball standout and YSU Hall of Famer, will be the guest speaker at today’s Curbstone Coaches Association luncheon at noon at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza. The public is welcome.

McDonald selling tickets for game
MCDONALD
Advance tickets for tonight’s Division IV boys district semifinal between McDonald and Lowellville at the Struthers Fieldhouse will be on sale during school hours in the McDonald High School office.
Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students. All tickets at the gate will cost $6.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Dowd’s grand slam helps produce split

Sophomore Sarah Dowd went 2-for-4 and hit her second career grand slam as the Youngstown State softball team (4-6) defeated Norfolk State, 7-2, on Sunday. The Penguins also lost to UNC-Wilmington.
Dowd’s grand slam was just the 12th in school history and she became the first player to record more than one. Trailing 2-1 after one, Dowd’s slam gave the Penguins a 5-2 lead.
Freshman Ashley Kozialk struck out seven in 4.2 innings pitched to pick up her second win. Against UNC-Wilmington, Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-2 and scored the Penguins’ run.
Sullivan homers in YSU loss
Westfield, Ind.
Indiana State got timely hitting and 16 strikeouts from its pitching staff to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 9-3 on Sunday at Grand Park near Indianapolis.
The Penguins were on the diamond for the first time in 22 days due to back-to-back weekends with weather-related cancellations. YSU got two hits from Jake Fryman and two runs and a home run from Matt Sullivan. The Penguins went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and failed to put the ball in play on 16 of their 27 outs.
YSU starter Kevin Yarabinec allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings, and Josh North surrendered four earned runs in three innings. Austin Conway relieved Degano in the seventh, and he struck out six batters while allowing just the Sullivan homer. Degano earned his third victory of the season, and Conway was awarded his first save.
YCS fund-raiser has 20 Cavs tickets

Youngstown Christian has 20 tickets remaining for the Indiana Pacers-Cleveland Cavaliers game on March 20 at Quicken Loans Arena.

Gabriel doubles for first college hit
KNOXVILLE, Tenn
Poland High graduate Erin Gabriel hit a RBI double for her first career hit for Tennessee in Sunday’s 12-0 victory over Indiana State.
Gabriel recorded four strikeouts in pitching the fourth and fifth innings. The No. 11 Lady Vols went 5-0 this weekend.
