Mooney girls make title round, finish 8th

The Coldwater Cavaliers won their third girls bowling state championship — first in Division II — Friday at the 2015 OHSAA Division II girls bowling state tournament at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Cardinal Mooney took eighth place and Hubbard finished in 13th. Struthers sophomore Jamie King finished 79th overall as an individual participant.
The Cardinals advanced in the morning portion of the tournament with scores of 823-828-703-2354. In the baker games, they bowled scores of 118-198-115-471. Mooney’s overall team scored was 2825, placing them in the eighth seed for the afternoon session.
However they were unable to beat top-seeded Mechanicsburg in the championship round. They lost in four frames, posting scores of 169-184-139-166 to Mechanicsburg’s 227-152-178-210.
Michalia Dudley of Hubbard finished tied for 22nd overall with scores of 201-171-170-542. Eagles freshman Sabrina Romano finished in 24th with scores of 190-220-125-535.
Christian Dama was the high-bowler for Mooney with scores of 172-183-174-529. She finished 27th overall. Senior Clara Angeloff finished in 50th with scores of 179-155-150-484.
Other bowlers for the Cardinals included: Adrianna Popovich with scores of 170-169-118-457, Brittaney Mingo with scores of 125-182-136-443 and Courtney Unger with scores of 177-139-125-441.
Other bowlers for Hubbard included: Alexis Cobbin with scores of 149-129-152-430, Emily Davis with scores of 106-142-140-388, Kinsey DiPetro with scores of 127-123-250 and Brittany Realty with a score of 135.
King had scores of 144-133-110-387.
Coldwater defeated Napoleon in five frames in the state final match, posting scores of 172-115-211-167-177 to Napoleon’s 157-202-173-201-144.
With the victory, Coldwater holds claim to the most state championships in OHSAA girls bowling, which became a sanctioned sport in 2007. The Cavaliers defeated Urbana and Springfield Kenton Ridge to reach the state finals. Napoleon earned its first state runner-up in girls bowling. Napoleon had made five appearances in the OHSAA girls bowling state tournament prior to 2015.
Bryan freshman Danika Hickey bowled a 678 (179-235-264) to earn individual state champion honors and set a new Division II girls state tournament record for highest three-game series. The previous record was held by 2014 Division II girls individual champion, Urbana’s Taylor Bodey (658).
The Division II boys bowling state tournament will be held today and the Division I girls and boys state bowling tournaments will be March 13-14 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Competing in today’s boys tournament will be Struthers, Hubbard and Lakeview.
LaBrae’s Brandon Bergstrom is the area’s only individual qualifier.
