A Struthers man is in the Mahoning County jail on $40,000 bond after he was arraigned in municipal court Friday on a felony burglary charge.

Frank Vetrano, 27, of Maplewood Avenue in Struthers is accused of breaking into a home in the 3500 block of Kreiger Lane on Nov. 1, 2014, while the homeowner’s husband was in the hospital.

Taken were jewelry items belonging to the husband that were gifts from his wife or children, according to statements in the case file.

The case file said none of the jewelry was registered or had serial numbers. Assistant City Prosecutor Shelli Freeze said the items probably are gone forever. “These items will not be able to be retrieved,” Freeze said.

Vetrano was arrested after the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation was able to match fingerprints collected at the scene by personnel from the police department’s crime lab.

The department was informed of the match Jan. 15, according to court records. Vetrano was taken into custody this week while he was in the jail on unrelated charges from another jurisdiction.

Reports said the home-owner was gone Nov. 1 but returned about 4:30 p.m. and found a window broken on the garage that allowed someone to get inside the house. Blood was found on the windows and floor, and items inside the husband’s car were moved around, but nothing in the car appeared to have been taken, reports said.

Reports said the jewelry was in a jewelry box that was taken.

Freeze told Magistrate Anthony Sertick Jr. that Vetrano has several arrests and convictions in the past, including for aggravated burglary and two assaults in 2013 and burglary and receiving-stolen-property charges last year.
