A man who police said accosted the mother of his child in a Market Street hair salon in January was arraigned on a domestic-violence charge Friday in municipal court.
Rydell Duke, 27, is in the Mahoning County jail on $40,000 bond after his arraignment by Magistrate Anthony Sertick on a fourth-degree felony charge of domestic violence.
Assistant City Prosecutor Shelli Freeze told Magistrate Sertick that Duke has two previous domestic-violence charges, both against the same victim in January’s incident. Freeze said the last charge was a felony domestic violence in 2012 that was amended to a misdemeanor. Court records show he pleaded no contest to that charge, was found guilty and sentenced to 180 days in jail with 150 days suspended and credit for 10 days served.
Freeze said Duke also has past arrests for driving under the influence, receiving stolen property and possession of drugs.
Reports said officers were called to the hair salon in the 3400 block of Market Street about 2:50 p.m. Jan. 16, where a 22-year-old woman told them she was in a chair getting her hair done when Duke came in and was upset that the woman had blocked him from seeing their 9-month-old child at a day care.
According to a statement by the victim, she told Duke she did not want him around their son because of some of the criminal conduct he was arrested for. Reports said he pushed her out of the chair and threatened to kill her before he left.
Police arrested Duke on a warrant about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in the first block of Market Street.
Besides the bond, Duke also has a no-contact order, which means he is not allowed to contact the victim in the case by any means.
